New this year...the Zeal for Teal invitation is extended to not only our wonderful, faithful, creative scrapbookers and cardmakers, but also to crafters of any flavour! We attended a wonderful crop in Listowel a little while ago put on by Renee Dykstra Beswitherick. (All her amazing efforts helped raise funds for for the Diabetic Association!) Most who attended that day were avid scrapbookers but we did notice some gals who were sewing patchwork quilts while others were doing some other craft work. We thought that a lovely idea. So we thought we would tell anyone interested to bring along their knitting needles, crocheting hooks, sewing machine, and so on to ZEAL for TEAL. So go ahead and spread the word.

We are thrilled to let everyone know that we will have our happy vendors back on board again - with a few extra surprises.

There is another planning meeting this weekend for the Zeal for Teal committee so there will be more exciting news to follow. We just wanted to remind you about the Early Bird Special.

At our Zeal for Teal Fabulous 50s Scrapbooking and Cardmaking fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Canada I will be announcing the official release of A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider. This wonderful anthology of inspiring stories written by 37 Canadian Authors is a delicious read. I am so excited to be part of this great book and honoured to be in the company of some pretty grand writers. One of the(many) reasons that I am going to be announcing the release of Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider at Zeal for Teal is because I am donating $5 from the sale of each book to Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope and another $5 will go to The Word Guild. Exciting things are afoot in the Zeal for Teal department. We are happy to announce that registration is just about 90% filled! Once we reach 100 registered participants then we move to a waiting list for those not so early birds. We can hardly believe the response. And we still have over a month until our big day.We are excited.

We've had so many great sponsors and some fantastic door prizes are popping in daily. Get practicing that hula hoop and bubblegum blowing - we are turning back the clocks and getting ready for the biggest scrapbooking and card-making party ever in this community. Our 50's theme is such fun to prepare for and we are anticipating a rocking good time.

Exciting news, too. Claudia Connor, the National Coordinator for the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope, will be joining us. We are thrilled that she is coming all the way from Toronto to support us in our endeavours. Ovarian cancer is sometimes called the silent killer, but there will be nothing 'silent' at the Drayton Arena, April 30th. We are planning on turning up the volume on ovarian cancer and raising funds to help wherever we can.

The Sunflower Seeds team will be walking in Kitchener this year - September the 11th. (More exciting details about this later.)

Our special, friendly cooks are planning on donning their whites and cooking up a storm. The 'retro menu' is guaranteed to tickle your tastebuds.

One For the Money...Two for the Show...Three to Get Ready...

The Sunflower Seeds Team and the rest of the Rockin' Good Committee members are working hard to make Zeal for Teal [our scrapbooking & cardmaking fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Canada] a memorable, fun-filled day for everyone. Bring on the 50's!

We are having another planning meeting this weekend so we will update you on the latest news ASAP!

Meanwhile, let me introduce you to our committee members:

1. Amanda Newton is the brains behind our Zeal for Teal Ovarian Cancer Canada events [oh, and did I mention - she is also my darling daughter.] Ever since my tango with cancer in 2008, Amanda's passion to 'do something to help,' has encouraged and inspired me. When she first came up with the idea, I was tired and exhausted from chemo and fighting the good fight. But she would never let me say 'die.' Instead, she gave me a sense of purpose and at the same time, she helped us both find a way to give back and help out. She found out about the Ovarian Cancer Canada's Winner's Walk of Hope and she signed us up as The Sunflower Seeds team right away. It's been three years now and still we continue to walk and do our part to fundraise and help turn up the volume on this silent killer. And this will be our third annual Zeal for Teal fundraiser thanks to Amanda (who has blessed me more than she will ever know!)

2. Darlene Hauser is like a faithful puppy. This wonderful friend and angel in disguise has been an encourager and helper beyond imagination. When she found out I had cancer, Darlene was one of the first on the scene to plan and assure me that she was there for me - no restrictions. Full course meals following every course of chemotherapy [and in between] were in order and hardly a week would go by without a call, a card, or an uplifting telephone call. Ms. Dar has changed my life for the better. She has taught me how to 'pay it forward' and how to give unconditionally. On the committee, Darlene is ready, willing and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound and we count it all joy that she has been with Zeal for Teal from the beginning. We couldn't do it without her.

3. Amber Tuck is our bubbling well of enthusiasm. Her tender heart spills over with compassion and it has been more than a pleasure getting to know her and see her on fire for a purpose. Amber has single-handedly organized the three banks in our area to support Teal Fridays. The girls at each bank give a little donation every week to wear teal each Friday up until April 30th - the 3rd annual Zeal for Teal day. When we have our planning meetings, Amber is armed and ready with a list of ideas and suggestions to make the day a memorable one for our participants. Yet, at the same time, Amber has tact and patience. Her managerial skills are obvious, but so are her people skills as she is respectful and doesn't try to force her ideas on anyone. We are honoured to have such a gifted soul in our midst. I can't wait to hear what she has on her list when we meet again in a few days!

4. Rosemary Latham is new to the Drayton area but not new to my heart. I remember going to the theatre with Rosemary in March 2008. We had taken Dad out for a treat. We had slipped away to the washroom during intermission and it was then I told her about this funny lump in my abdomen. She assumed her big sister role and ordered me to get to the Dr's ASAP and get it checked out. It was good to know she was still taking care of me. And now she lives here and I am thrilled. If you come to Zeal for Teal this year, you will spot some beautiful, hand-knitted teal scarves in the silent auction and maybe one or two will be door prizes. Rosemary is the talented creator! She is the one with the knitting gene! Rosemary promises to be the runner this year on our special day and has already committed to being bossed around! It'll be fun bossing my big sis' around!

5. Amanda Hauser, because she is younger than the other committee members, she might become awfully bored at a planning meeting. For that reason, we save her for the big day. Amanda is our handy do-er of all things we ask her to do! I found a little card from Amanda the other day. She was 10 when I first started with my treatments. The card had some lovely 10 year old artwork on it and the writing said I was the best and that all the cancer would go away soon. Thanks, sweet Amanda, for your prophecy. We are hoping and praying. You, too, are the best! And speaking of the best, Amanda will be the one jogging back and forth and keeping up with all our demands and every other request in between.

6. Glynis Belec - yours truly. Not much to say, other than I may be considered the mouthpiece for the Zeal for Teal day on April 30th! I am so blessed and feel so loved. I am thankful that my ovarian cancer was found in the early stage and I want to do my part to help other women to become aware - just in case!

A Sweetheart of an Idea

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Do you know some special someone who might just like a day out with purpose?

We are looking forward to a rocking good time on April 30th. Maybe this might just be the right time to shower your sweetheart with a lovely surprise.

For $40, she will be able to pack up her scrapbooking or cardmaking luggage and come on down to the Drayton arena. Registration begins at 8:30 with the official starting time at 9am.

Our theme this year is The 50s! Expect to be pampered and spoiled with prizes, scrapbooking surprises, wonderful diner delights, complimentary mini manicures, games galore, information tables, a silent auction and fellowship like you can't imagine. We are offering a visitors pass for $5 donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada, and we invite our guests to drop in and share a snack and beverage then check out some of our scrapbooking, cardmaking, 'yard sale' and book tables.

Ovarian cancer is a terrible, insidious disease. As we gather together as sisters for a cause, we do so to help turn up the volume about this often fatal gynelogical cancer. This day promises to be a memorable time as we celebrate life and hope. All profits from Zeal for Teal will go directly to

Hey all you Chickie babies, cool cats, greasers, and motor heads. Time to put on your best threads, lose the squares, and get ready to head to fat city for the biggest bash of the year. If scrapbooking and cardmaking is your game, then get ready. You are in for a crazy time and all for a great cause.

All the hip people will be cruising to the Drayton Arena April 30th and getting creative. Don't worry if you are not cool with the cropping. There's someone there to guide you through and show you the ropes. We plan on having a vendor alley filled with Scrapbooking folks with lots of new and interesting wares and products to show and share with you.

This is a big ol' reminder to one and all to get your registrations in early and save $5! The early bird deadline is January 31st. After that, the regular fee is still a bargain at $40.

As an ovarian cancer survivor, considered in remission, I am thrilled that once again I can join the fantastic Sunflower Seeds team and help do my part. So many things have happened over the year that have made me realize how truly blessed I am to be here. So many women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer are found at the later stages. The prognosis is much different then. However we NEVER give up hope.

Hooray! Just a few days before we get to dive in and enjoy a ‘day at the beach’ with Zeal for Teal 2010.

We are thrilled that participants are putting aside the time to spend with us and in the process, helping a great cause. Just to remind you that all proceeds from Zeal for Teal go to the Winner’s Walk of Hope for Ovarian Cancer Canada.

Saturday, June 26, 2010 promises to be a day packed full of prizes and surprises; laughter and fellowship; encouragement and creativity. You won’t want to miss it. And, no, you are not too late to register. Hit the ‘contact me’ button and we will be in touch!

And now, speaking of creativity, it’s time to introduce you to a woman who you might just want to seek out this Saturday. Pam Vanderwood, who just happens to be a bit of a creative soul, is jumping on board with us representing Creative Memories. Pam is going to be teaching the beginner’s class. She has kindly offered to encourage and share some techniques to beginner scrapbookers and those who might need a bit of a refresher! We are so grateful that Pam is so willing to share her gifts.

Pam has faced some challenges in her life, the latest being recovery from losing her husband.

“My life has taken a change in direction this past month as my husband and father of my five sons went Home to be with the Lord,” Pam tells us.

Undeterred, Pam inhales deeply and is determined to journey on, trusting and believing that life holds great purpose for her family and for herself.

Pam is an Independent Creative Memories Consultant and she enjoys meeting and sharing the Creative Memories philosophy and unique product in client’s homes, at trade shows and at other public venues.

Pam really enjoys the hands-on teaching aspect that Creative Memories affords.

“I enjoy seeing completed pages,” Pam says as she talks about how she encourages workshop participants in the fine art of scrapbooking.

Her enthusiasm abounds as Pam talks about how she looks forward to sharing exciting new products and Creative Memories scrapbooking opportunities with her clients.

First Choice - Zeal for Teal!

Rain, rain, go away...bring the sun on Saturday!

It might be raining today but no matter the weather, we know the sun will be shining at the Drayton arena on Saturday. We are expecting a lovely 'day at the beach' with lots of laughter, fun and fellowship.

We hope some people will drop in to visit, too, even though they might not be adept in the art of scrapbooking or cardmaking. For a $5 donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) Winner's Walk of Hope, visitors can have a cup of coffee (tea, juice, pop) along with a snack, browse Vendor Alley, check out the silent auction, the OCC table and books by Canadian authors. So if you know of anyone who would like to drop in for a visit, then tell them about this walk-in option! :)

Participants can also sign up for a half day 'at the beach,' too, for $20. (9-noon or 1 to 5.) 'Course, you'll miss out on our great hot/cold picnic lunch and all the fun that will happen before or after! But we still promise you a great half day of fun, fun, fun!

Now for some exciting news. Not only do we have great stores in our Vendor Alley, we have a well-stocked and incredibly interesting onsite scrapbooking supply store joining us once again.

First Choice Trophies and Scrapbooking returns! This fine Listowel business, owned and operated by Tracey deWeerd has been serving the community and beyond for 13 years.

Tracey is not shy about sharing her passion for preserving memories. After 25 years of marriage to her hubby Jeff and having had the thrill of raising her three fine lads and one charming daughter, Tracey has collected many memories along the way.

"We are very much a faith based family and love all the challenges God throws our way!" Tracey said when asked to share a little about her life beyond her business.

Tracey enjoys being busy, as evidenced by her constant involvement in the community.

"I help out with the scrapbooking at the fair. I teach [at] 4-H clubs. I have hosted birthday parties. [I] hold classes in the store. - attend CHA shows, Scrapfest, various crops, and host our own Harvest Crop in October."

Obviously Tracey is no stranger to hard work! I'm exhausted just writing out this list.

We are thrilled she has agreed to be our official onsite scrapbooking supply store again this year. Tracey has product of interest to all levels of scrappers including B0-Bunny (one of her favourites,) Kaisier Craft, Bazzill, Basic Grey and more. Make sure you stop by and check out her great wares!

I asked Tracey to say a few words about why she is attending Zeal for Teal.

"...well, I met this amazing young lady (Amanda) who was so supportive of the cause for her mothers sake...[then]when I met her mother at the first crop and heard her story, I was inspired. If we could only all be so positive and blessed even in times of despair..."

How sweet is that? People like Tracey motivate me into counting my blessings daily.

Tracey went on to share her heart..."Life is good ...and so we celebrate LIFE. What better way to do this than in a room of supportive women, who can laugh, cry and share with each other while doing what they love."

We can't wait to see Tracey again and yes, we do suggest you pop by and say a great big 'howdy' to our delightful First Choice Trophies and Scrapbooking rep (oh, and to Candice, her daughter who is joining us again and will be helping Mom in the process!)

Yes, Tracey...you are right. Life is good. And we are so looking forward to sampling a little of that goodness on Saturday, June 26, at Zeal for Teal. :) See you all there!

Zeal for Teal! Is There a Man in the House?

The clock ticketh!

In less than a week participants will be enjoying 'a day at the beach' with Zeal for Teal. Everyone is invited to don their comfy beach duds and get scrapping!

The kick-off to our 2nd annual Zeal for Teal fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) - Winner's Walk of Hope, begins at 9am this Saturday (June 26th.) Registration starts at 8:30am and conversation and activities begin at 9. Official welcome is at 9:30am so we hope everyone is on time and can manage to grab a snack and beverage to start off the day.

There seems so much to do, but the collective adrenalin allows us to work at high speed so we will be ready and eager to make this a great day for all. The content of the goody bags and door prizes alone are worth the drive to Drayton, if you happen to be from out of town!

By the way, we are still greatly welcoming registrations, so fear not about being 'too late!' We still want you with us. Remember, a portion of your $40 goes directly to OCC along with whatever other profits gleaned from the day! Also, a reminder about our walk-in special and Vendor Alley. Anyone is invited to come and visit throughout the day. A $5 charge (which goes directly to OCC) allows visitors to share in a snack and beverage of choice and they can peruse the wares and tables of vendors and partake of the silent auction.

One table you won't want to miss is one manned (and I mean that literally) by our only male - as of today - guest.

Tom Dennis of Drayton is the proud owner and creator of Dennis Chain Creations. If you want to see some creative jewelry, then you should see what Tom has to offer. I remember talking to Tom a while ago about his chain mail technique creations and he told me that one day he would like to make a full chain mail armor. Now that is quite an ambition.

Tom may not be offering chain mail armour at Zeal for Teal, but he is offering some amazing chain created fashion jewelry. And I might add, they are stunning.

Dennis Chain Creations is looking to do home parties in the near future, but for now Tom sells his wares at trade shows, by private appointment and other venues.

"I will be turning 26 this year, and work as 'the door guy' in a custom cabinet shop in Palmerston," Tom said, when I asked him how he spends his days.

But obviously, jewelry design and creation is his passion.

"I have been making jewellery for over a year and a half, and we are constantly expanding."

Tom realizes the reality of martketplace competition so he strives to keep prices reasonable, and comparative or even below typical jewelery store costs.

Tom indicates that his company likes to specialize in the unique and cites 'green garnets' as an example.
"We will have a variety of rings, earrings and some bracelets that we will be showing [at Zeal for Teal.]" Tom said.

He also hinted that there may be some last minute specials for us to enjoy! Oooh, don't we just love surprises?

Tom has resided in Drayton for most of his life and is eager to find ways to give back and help out the community. We sure do appreciate Tom joining us on Saturday as one of our Vendor Alley guests. Tea for Two at Zeal for Teal!

One more week to the big day! Just think, all these great plans will soon come to fruition and we will be enjoying the moment. Our Second Annual Zeal for Teal promises to be quite a time. We can’t wait to see you there.

This Ovarian Cancer Canada - Winner's Walk of Hope fundraiser offers participants a wonderful day at the beach. Well it's not really the beach, but we are having 'a day at the beach' as our theme so it's only right to think sunshine and relaxation. And what better way to relax than to have a nice cup of tea - Steeped Tea, to be specific!

And speaking of Steeped Tea, let me introduce another one of our great vendors - Peg Schieck from Drayton, our delightful Steeped Tea Hostess. Have you heard of the Steeped Tea company? If you haven't, then let me be the first to recommend you pay this gal a visit on Saturday. One of my favourite teas is Leapin' Lizards Chai and, another one I really like is called After Eight (yep' – it really is chocolate mint!)

Peg not only sells tea, she also offers a fine array of tea accessories.

Peg, who has been selling Steeped Tea for two years, is quite a tea connoisseur.

Expect to be Pampered! Vendor Alley Interview with Deanna Faris (Pampered Chef)

The Sunflower Seeds are digging in their heels and getting things organized and ready for June 26th - our Zeal for Teal Crop day (and more!) We can hardly wait - although we still have lots to do. It sure looks like we are in for a great day of fun and fundraising in the merriest sense.There is nothing funny about ovarian cancer and its often dismal diagnosis but from someone who has been there, I discovered that it is a waste of time sitting around bemoaning one's fate.

Amanda challenged me to get involved with the Winner's Walk of Hope and Ovarian Cancer Canada. So I took her up on it. I now choose to surround myself with happy people and those who look at the half full glass. That would be you!

I will be sharing a little bit about ovarian cancer and my journey at Zeal for Teal, and will be encouraging participants to think about their own bodies and to be alert to any untoward signs and symptoms. But the day is going to focus on hope and health and happiness! Make sure you register soon!

Zeal for Teal promises to be an upbeat, extravaganza for scrapbookers and cardmakers - beginners and seasoned pros.
Don't forget - we have a beginner's class for our rookies!

And isn't that a great segue into our next featured Vendor Alley patron - Deanna Faris? Deanna is our Pampered Chef consultant who is making the long trip from Cookstown. She heard about our Zeal for Teal and is excited to come and join us for the day and show her fine products.

Deanna is a stay at home mom of two little darlings and one on the way! When she is not tending to her little ones, she keeps herself busy selling Pampered Chef products.

"I work mostly at home parties for social nights, bridal showers and fundraisers," Deanna says.

We are thrilled to have her join us for our Zeal for Teal 'party,' too.

Pampered Chef is a quality product with some wonderful and handy gadgets for the kitchen.

Lighting up Zeal for Teal - Featuring Maureen McDonald (Jemscents - Mia Bella Candles)

Zeal for Teal is a mere dozen days away and we are getting excited! Busyness is the order of the day as we get down to the nitty gritty of making this year's fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Canada the best yet. Okay, so this is only the second one, but we are gearing up for a spectacular day. The Sunflower Seeds are busy gathering the most appreciated silent auction and door prize donations and a million other tasks. Our goals is for smooth sailing so that YOU will experience a day to remember. We are bound and determined to shine a light on this dark disease and to prove that cancer is only a word and not a sentence!

And speaking of shining a light, now might be a good time to introduce our latest Vendor Alley gal - Maureen McDonald who will be offering her Mia Bella Candles and products through her (deliciously sounding) business, Jamscents.

Maureen is an independent distributor for Mia Bella’s Candles and, although she just started her business in January 2010, she is already passionate about her product. "I love the candles," Maureen says as she details the way she does her marketing.

"Lately I have been doing trade shows, but I’m would love to do home parties, office parties, email orders, church groups, and fundraising opportunities for any organization that needs to raise money."

It sounds like the possibilities are endless with our local candle lady. Maureen lives in Drayton with her hubby and two children and seems to be thoroughly enjoying life as a Mia Bella representative. She finds her new business an excellent way to meet and get to know new friends.

Maureen's first introduction to Mia Bella Candles was when she received one as a gift.

"I fell in love with it," Maureen confesses. "It was a Christmas candle called Home for Christmas."

Apparently Mia Bella candles have an amazing ability to permeate evenly.

'Within twenty minutes, the Christmas smell was throughout my house," Maureen remembers. "What impressed me the most [was] the 16 oz candle [that] burned evenly all the way down. I had nothing left at the bottom of the jar."

Obviously the candle impressed Maureen so much, that the following month she became the Drayton Mia Bella representative and has been going strong since.

Another selling feature about Mia Bella is their 'going green' earth friendly fragrances and clean burning natural wax.

"It makes it a perfect candle for any environmentally conscious lifestyle, " Maureen says.

We are excited to hear that Maureen's display at Zeal for Teal will include her 16 oz candles, along with simmer pots, mia melts, spa candle etc. I've seen a catalogue from Mia Belle and I am fascinated by the pie plate candles. So pretty!

Maureen, in her typical kind manner, is donating a perfectly suited item for our silent auction.

"I’m donating a Mia Bella Candle for Cure candle for the silent auction," Maureen said, as I grinned like a Cheshire cat. How fitting is that?

I like Maureen's attitude when she says, "Cancer can be beaten!" She reminded me that a lit candle can be a great focal point in a room and can be a wonderful way to relax after a stressful day. They can rejuvenate you and bring a smile to your face. Anything that can do that, is a good investment in my books! :)

Gearing Up for Stampin' Up! Featuring Margaret de Witt

Time is getting on and so are the plans for our great Beach themed day - Zeal for Teal! Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun...please shine down on us! (But even if it rains, the sun will be shining on our day. We can feel it already!)

Ovarian Cancer Canada has been wonderfully supportive and have sent all sorts of great items and information for our goody bags. So many others have been supportive too, including our next featured Vendor Alley gal - Margaret de Witt from Stampin' Up.

Margaret, an independent demonstrator for Stampin' Up, works from her home, client's homes, and in schools.
"I LOVE stamping and papercrafting," says Margaret and she has been at it since 2004, she tells us. Margaret admits to her passion for stamping.

"I fell in love with the craft before I even tried it myself."

There was no doubt in her mind what she wanted to do as a business venture.

"I instantly knew that I wanted to sell Stampin' Up!'s fantastic products."

Margaret hosts stamp clubs, offers private classes and holds events in her home or in the homes of interested customers. And if that isn't enough, she teaches specialized classes through the continuing education program with the Upper Grand District School Board.
"Each year Stampin' Up! releases a new catalogue in July," Margaret explains, "which means a lot of products retire before the new release."

Generous as always, Margaret will be donating 50% of her own profit from any retiring product ordered (while quantities last) at our Zeal for Teal fundraiser. Applause! Applause!
Not only that, Margaret tells us she will also be offering a 50% discount off the hostess party fees booked for the month of July and August with a minimum of 6 people attending. Regular fee is $10.00 per person (discounted fee is $5.00 per person) Hostess party includes 3 handmade cards with envelopes BONUS - individual participant fee will be waived completely with a $50.00 order (before S/H and tax). So if you are interested in booking a party, you might want to stop by her table in Vendor's Alley on June 26th.

I asked Margaret why she is so faithful and is attending Zeal for Teal again this year. She is blatantly honest as she shares her intimate reason for climbing on board with our Ovarian Cancer Canada fundraiser.

"I think it is an important issue to raise awareness. I recently lost an ovary due to complications with a cyst and was fortunate that cancer was not detected. Women need to understand how important it is to be aware of their bodies and for signs of problems."

Well said, Margaret. Zeal for Teal is intent on helping where we can and if even one woman can be detected early for ovarian cancer, then we have reason to celebrate.
We look forward to sharing the day with Margaret and all our other fine vendors. Plan on an amazing day. We sure are!

Vendor Alley - Featuring Amanda Kabbes (Tupperware)

Registrations are happening and we are delighted to see some new faces in the mix. We are also thrilled that many of last years participants are returning for another day of scrapbooking with a purpose!

There are lots of new surprises planned for everyone, including our new Vendor Alley. Today I would like to introduce you to another one of our great vendors who is as excited about her business and product and is eager to share that with us on June 26th.

Amanda Kabbes is our Tupperware representative. Amanda's enthusiasm for her new business endeavour is contagious as she shares how she does it not only for extra income, but also for fun!

Amanda does mostly homeparties but judging by her eagerness to jump on board the Zeal for Teal ship, she enjoys public presentations, too.

"I will have some sale items," says Amanda, as she talks about reducing her inventory a little before the baby comes. Oh, did I mention she is having baby number three soon?

Vendor Alley - Featuring Karen Weber (Epicure)

June 26th is shaping up to be a marvelous day of scrapbooking and cardmaking with purpose. All profits go to Ovarian Cancer Canada Winner's Walk of Hope, so we are anticipating great things with our increased numbers.

A new experience for participants this year is our Vendor Alley. Since we have shifted location, we are able to spread our wings a little and we have invited local and other business folk to come share the day with us and offer their wares.

Don't worry, there will be no high pressure sales; just opportunities to see what's out there and make purchases at your leisure if you like.

First on the block is our new Epicure Rep, Karen Weber. Karen Weber [formally Timmerman] hails from the Drayton area and now lives in Elmira with her hubby Randy and is the busy mother of a three year old, two year old, and a new baby born in April!

Karen is an Independent Epicure consultant with Epicure Selections, which is a 100% Canadian owned and operated company. Epicure's main product is spice blends.

I asked Karen to offer us a few details about her products and she was more than pleased to describe some of the items she sells.

"Some of Epicure's top sellers," says Karen, "are the Cheese, Chives & Bacon dip, the 3 Onion dip, Salsa blend, Summer Berry fruit dip, and the Beef & Steak Seasoning."

They sound pretty tempting to this particular palate! Karen tells me there are so many different spice blends to choose from.

"My personal favorite," says Karen, "is the Pizza Seasoning. Not only do I use it on my pizza, but in my pasta, and on my chicken."

Karen usually sells Epicure products at home parties. If anyone wants to find out about holding a party at their home or business, then you can talk to her about a booking.

Karen understands the busyness of our days and how sometimes it seems impossible to set up or attend an Epicure event, so she does say she takes individual orders whenever the need arises.

There are a few tempting incentives for hosting an Epicure party, if you do have the time, including a free tote bag, 1/2 price items, and monthly hosting specials!

The theme for this year's Zeal for Teal is 'A Day at the Beach.' Dig out those flip flops and sundresses and get comfy. We anticipate a wonderful, relaxing day.

We also have our very own esthetician, Janet Wilson returning to offer free mini manicures throughout the day, along with an onsite personal trainer who will keep us on our toes with the occasional fit break. Who knows, maybe we'll even find a pool to paddle in! We have it all. You don't want to miss it.

After expenses all profits go to the Ovarian Cancer Canada Winner's Walk of Hope to be held September 12th in Barrie. The Sunflower Seeds team is revving up and looking forward to doing their part to help women get diagnosed earlier and to help conquer and one day eradicate this disease often dubbed the silent killer, ovarian cancer. There is a 90% survival rate for women with ovarian cancer who are caught in the early stages. The statistics are a little more grim for those who have late stage ovarian cancer.

We are excited! We have been in touch with Ovarian Cancer Canada and they are supporting us 100% in our fundraising Zeal for Teal Day on May 2nd. They are going to list ‘Zeal for Teal’ on their official Coming Events page, too, and have indicated that they will be sending us some material to share with participants. And get this, they have even asked if I would consider being a speaker and trained presenter for their Listen to the Whispers program. Yikes!

I know Zeal for Teal is focused on a wonderful day of scrapbooking and cardmaking, and the events we have planned are intended to put a smile on participant’s faces. That is our goal and we are bound and determined to make this a day to remember.

But as I consider our purpose for doing this and Amanda my rocking-good daughter’s motivation for turning an idea into a reality, I think back to April 24th, 2008. I remember saying to Gilles, my hubby – “No, of course you don’t need to come with me (to the doctor’s.) I’m just menopausal and my uterus is probably a little out of whack. As I sat in the doctor’s office and she walked in uttering those words…The news isn’t good…” I remember the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. And when she continued with…Ovarian cancer…’ I remember nothing. My world came crashing down and within moments I was mentally planning my own funeral.

We got through that day. The hardest part was when we had to stand before our children and tell them. But we found strength in each other and God’s grace and mercy took over. We rallied. We cried. We prayed and we cried some more. But then we got on with life, with chemo and I put on my ‘big girl panties’ as Amanda and Janice like to say, and we did it. The road was not easy, but here we are almost 11 months later and I guess I am now considered a survivor. No one knows what is around that corner, but my faith and my family have helped me take stock of what is truly important and if I can help someone else or encourage more women to become more aware of their bodies, then I will do it.

The intention of this day is not for people to attend out of pity or any other such motivation. We want to help do our part to raise awareness about Ovarian Cancer and to make sure women know what ovarian cancer is and what they can do about it in a fun-filled, exciting way. There will be no hard lectures or great speeches on May 2nd about cancer, but there will be information available and people to talk to if you are interested. We are getting together to celebrate and have fun while doing something positive for the cause!

The Excitement Builds

When I was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I thought the worst thing in this world at the time was to have to tell my children. When Gilles and I broke the news to them, it was tough. But instead of looks of fear and a flood of tears, we felt such love and support. Of course my beautiful offspring and their spouses were concerned and I am sure, afraid too, of the unknown, but they surrounded us with arms of comfort and words of encouragement that lifted me up and soothed my pain.

Throughout my journey, our clan has always been there, urging me on to battle this ovarian cancer that is so appropriately dubbed the 'silent killer.'

Last year Amanda and Janice along with Amanda's mother-in-law (Pierrette) and I formed The Sunflower Seeds. Our motivation for the name was our desire to plant seeds and help raise awareness about ovarian cancer. We entered our Sunflower Seeds team in the Walk of Hope Mini Walk in Barrie last September and we raised over $6000 for the cause. We were thrilled. People were so generous when we sought sponsorship.

The team lives on. This year we will walk again in September, but to give us a head start, the girls are once again getting me cracking (no sitting around feeling sorry for yourself allowed!) and I am now diving head first into this exciting day in May and am helping any way I can. Jayme also participates in the Winners Walk of Hope out in Alberta because this cause is near and dear to her heart as her friend has battled this silent cancer...a HUGE thank you to Jayme and good luck with your walk in September! Pajama Day Cropping for Cancer

The First Annual Pajama Day - Zeal for Teal Crop for Cancer

ATTENTION SCRAPBOOKERS AND CARDMAKERS

YOU are invited to a special all day crop to help raise money for Ovarian Cancer Canada. This creative, popular event will be held at the Drayton Reformed Church on May 2nd, 2009 from 9am-5pm.
A delicious lunch, all-day snacks and drinks and a chance to win some amazing door prizes are all included in the entrance fee.

Tickets are $40 with a guaranteed $10 being donated to our team's sponsorship. ALL other proceeds from this exciting day will be donated to Ovarian Cancer Canada. You will also receive a FREE goodie bag upon arrival, filled with samples and freebies from our generous sponsors.

ALL levels of crafters are welcome. We will have a "swap shop" available plus an onsite store just incase you forget that perfect embellishment or a much needed piece of cardstock. There will also be make 'n takes available to do during the day at your own leisure. Come prepared to have a day of fun and fellowship.

We are able to reserve tables for groups so please let us know if you are coming as a group when you register (only four per table to ensure enough scrapping space!)
